Re: Spring Break Adjustment

Families of Canadian Rockies Public Schools,

As you are aware, CRPS solicited parent feedback to inform a decision with regard to adjusting spring break for the 2019/2020 school year. CRPS explored this possibility to provide for “better” continuity of learning for students,as well as to allow families and staff the possibility of taking better advantage of their vacation time.

Many thanks for your timely response to our survey and for providing us with so many helpful insights. Well over 800 parents responded to the survey, with approximately 175 having children attending more than one school. We also want to thank you for the numerous supportive and positive comments that you took the time to share with us.

Of the parents who completed the survey, 95% are in favour of a spring break adjustment to the following dates:

●  Spring Break will now be April 10th - April 17th, 2020 (includes Good Friday).

●  The school year will end for students at 12:00 pm on June 22nd, 2020.

●  There will be no school for students from June 23rd to 26th, 2020.

Based on some of your comments, we do want to clarify that our current two week break is not only part of our division calendar, but it is also built into our teacher and administrator collective agreements/contracts. This means that we must maintain exactly the same number of days for spring break, whenever it occurs. We cannot “reduce” or “increase” the number of days for spring break, we only have the option of moving the days within the calendar.

We are pleased to share that based on the strong agreement of parents and staff, as well as support from the ATA and CUPE, the CRPS Board has made the decision to change the spring break to the dates indicated above. The revised calendar will be posted on the CRPS website.

Thank you for sharing your voice with us. Parents will continue to be critical partners as we work together to support our common purpose - the growth and success of your children. Please reach out to your school with any questions or issues that you may experience within this new learning environment. Each of our respective school staffs are here to support you.
